Nightlights as Indicator of Growth in Economic Activity in states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa
A study across four states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa was conducted with nightlights as indicators of growth and economic activity by the India Data Portal, Bharti Institute. This report presents data and visualisations for all four states and provides pertinent insights from illustrations on the level and change in economic activity covering all assembly constituencies of these states individually. The four nightlight variables highlighted here include change in total radiance, percent change in total radiance, change in total number of lit pixels and percentage change in lit pixels. An increasing number of lit pixels suggests that economic activity is expanding to new areas, as previously dark pixels begin to show radiance in satellite images. On the other hand, total radiance denotes increased economic activity without saying anything about its distribution over space.
